What causes bloating?

shine043

Gastrointestinal bloating is one of the main symptoms clients with gut issues may come in with, and there are many reasons someone may have it.

Some causes of gastrointestinal bloating are:

· Bad bacteria or dysbiosis, which is an overgrowth of bad bacteria in the gut

· Small intestinal bacterial overgrowth (SIBO) is an infection of bacteria up into the small intestine, where it should not be

· Issues with digesting sugars like lactose or fructose malabsorption

· Overgrowth of Candida in the gut

· Poor production of hydrochloric acid and digestive enzymes

· Food intolerances and leaky gut

· Constipation

· Coeliac or other inflammatory bowel conditions

The Naturopathic approach to determine the cause of this bloating includes taking a detailed case history, including dietary recording. Sometimes clients will be sent off for testing, which may include ruling out more serious conditions such as Coeliac and stool testing for parasites. Furthermore, integrative testing, like microbiome testing, looks at the gut's bacterial balance and functional markets, which can aid in solving bloating issues.

Some basic treatments to help with bloating include probiotics, gut powders for repairing the gut lining, or herbs that may help calm digestion. However, the best treatment is always more targeted once a cause can be established.
