Reflux

Reflux is very common, affects between 10-30% of the population, and can disturb someone’s quality of life. Many people are treated with reflux medications like Nexium and Somac, which block the body’s production of gastric acid and cause downstream issues like mineral deficiencies like calcium, zinc, iron and B12, which can lead to anaemia and loss of bone mineral density, among other issues.

Reflux is often associated with Helicobacter pylori infection that causes gastritis or small intestinal bacterial overgrowth (SIBO). Therefore, any presentation of reflux needs to be investigated with breath testing for bacteria and parasites and possibly an endoscopy. In clinical practice, I see an increasing number of young adults presenting with these complaints. Risk factors include:

· Overweight and obesity · Pregnancy · Stress · Irritable bowel syndrome · Smoking · High-fat diets · Alcohol · Caffeine · Diabetes · Cardiovascular disease

An integrated management approach is required, which may include the following:

· Avoidance of aggravating foods

· Eradication of any existing pathogen like Helicobacter pylori or SIBO

· Co-prescription with medical treatment

· Promotion of healthy digestion with lifestyle suggestions and nutrients

· Increasing fibre through vegetables, fruit and whole grains

· Using natural supplements to soothe the digestive tract

· Promotion of good bacteria

· Lifestyle suggestions for stress reduction

Naturopathic treatment incorporates herbs and dietary and lifestyle suggestions. A healthy digestive tract populated with the right bacteria, free of irritation and fed with the appropriate diet can make a difference and improve quality of life.
